I started the blog in May of 2008, 11 years ago. It has been a labor of love over the past 11 years and there have been times (a few more than I'd like) where I had months of blogging to do to catch up. I really cherish having all of the pictures and memories captured and love being able to make books that my family can look through and remember the big things and the day to day little things. I told Greg that I am committed to blogging until all of the kids leave the house, so they can all look back and see their childhood. So here's to 2250 posts and a committment for at least 6 more years!
And he's off!
Zach took his first flight by himself yesterday morning. He is on his way to Utah to go to EFY with Ryan and to spend a week with the Whisamores. He was super excited!
Beth sent me these pictures from the Utah side. The signs that drivers hold have gotten really basic and are now on their phones.
Ryan and Danielle made their own sign with just a piece of bacon on it...well done!
Zach made it! I'm sure he is in for a great two weeks and lots of fun with cousins and hopefully a wonderful EFY week as well. Let the vacation begin!
Happy birthday Susie
I can't believe we didn't take pictures of us while we were in Cincinnati, but we didn't! I met Susie and Bindi at about 8:30 on Tuesday and we made our way to Cincinnati. Susie wanted to go to lunch at Pappadeauxs and I found this great pop-up shop called odAomo that we wanted to check out. This is the ad for the pop up shop. The clothing and jewelry is all from Kenya and it looked really enticing to us.
We got there and the shop wasn't open. I called and luckily the property owner was able to get in touch with the store owner and they came and let us in. We shopped and shopped! It was awesome. We all bought a little too much, but loved everything we got. After our shopping, we headed to Pappadeauxs.
It was SO good! We ate enough bread, appitizers and salad that we all brought our main meals home with us! This is actually a picture of my left overs from the next day. Blackened catfish, shrimp and dirty rice...so delicious!
We drove home after a long lunch and I got to the church exactly on time for YW. After, Susie and Bindi came and met me at the house and we made a 1st Shave Barbie. We actually made 2 of them because Susie has someone she "needs" to give one to and wanted a spare for a white elephant gift. When I told her about these dolls, we laughed and laughed. Hey, her birthday wish is my command!
After Barbie, we went to the late movie. We got back to my house and the kids were up playing games. We had a little treat and then Susie and Bindi went home - around 1:00. It was a wonderful day with the best of friends. We had "birthday miracles" all day long and couldn't have had more fun. Happy birthday Susie - I love you friend!
An impressive first
Ava made dinner all by herself this past week. She didn't just make a simple dinner, she went all out! She made a chicken spaghetti dish with a delicious sauce...
lemon bars...
and salads...complete with home made dressing and home made croutons!
It was a delicious meal and I was super proud of her for all of her hard work. She said a couple of times during the process, "cooking is hard". I think it was a good experience and she said she wants to do it once a month and keep trying out the recipes in the cook book that I got her (that's what sparked the desire to make dinner). She's a good chef in the making!
Like father, like son
Zach has had some late nights and he decided to take an example from Greg and grab the fuzzy blanket and hit the living room floor. He is a little twisted up, but sleeping like a baby...like father, like son!
High Adventure
The boys went to High Adventure in West Virginia and had a great time. These are pictures that were sent to all of the parents as updates about what the boys were doing and that they made it through the activities safely and had fun doing it!
This video of Andrew going backwards on a zip line was also sent...
The boys had a fantastic time and we are grateful for the leaders that took the time to take them on the adventure. One of them made a video of the trip and posted it on youtube. If you really want to see what the boys did, check it out!
Girls' Day Out!
The boys were both at High Adventure and Greg was out of town, so Ava and I had a girls' day out with the Williams. We went to go and see Toy Story 4 (which was really cute and funny) and then went to Freddy's to visit Karsen and have custard. It was a fun day out with the girls.
Youth Conference 2019
I was asked to teach a class at Youth Conference this year on how to receive answers to prayers. I had to teach it four times in a row (with a break for some lunch). I started each class with the same board and ended with all the things the kids filled in. It went well and it is always nice to be a part of youth conference - it was also nice to be done and check it off of the list. Susie taught a class too, so we went out to dinner after and celebrated! A perfect ending to a great day.
Happiness and love
Duke was very excited to see us after we got back from our trip and he was very, very happy to cuddle back up and take a nap on Greg. All good things have been restored in his little doggy life.
Boom!
My plants were doing well and growing when I left for vacation, but I came home to quite a boom of growth! It's so fun to see everything filling in...
Parksville (2 Days)
Greg went to work on both Monday and Tuesday. The kids and I explored during the day - right outside of our hotel! The low tide was crazy...this was the ocean last night! We were out in the tide pools for hours!
The first thing we found were these little crabs...they were everywhere!
They were even making homes in the shells we found.
We found sand dollars too.
The ground had some really cool designs on it from the waves.
The view looking back at the hotel.
Zach loved the crabs...here's a great close up!
We found bigger crabs too!
It took a while, but we finally made it all the way out to the water. It was really fun.
Headed back...
We found jellyfish...
We aren't sure exactly what was happening here or what the plants were attached to, but it sure was fun finding them and exploring!
We came back and had a yummy lunch and watched the tide come back in.
Before long, the water was back and so was Greg!
We went to meet up with the Karpowitz family to a place called...can you guess? Yep, Goats on the Roof! It's a pretty fun idea and it definitely makes you want to see it and shop there!
There is a really cute shopping village with a couple of restaurants. We headed to an Italian place that was recommended to Greg.
The views were fantastic...as was the food and the company.
Ava braved a really close, close up on the way out!
Next, we headed to the house where the Karpowitz's were staying. There were a lot of deer around and another amazing sunset.
I loved this plant too...it looked like something that would grow in a dessert, but then had super bright, deep pink flowers on sage colored stems. It was really pretty.
It was our last night with the Karpowitz's after almost 2 weeks of being together. So, we finally broke out the Dude! A game of charades that we brought on the trip to play with them! He was a hit!
It's your basic game of charades...kind of. Just add in a buddy who happens to be a blow up doll and let the laughter begin! It was the perfect way to end the vacation with our families. I love Christina and Cam and was so happy to meet their kids and have our families blend together for a couple of weeks. It is time that I treasure.
The next day, we went back to the Goats on the Roof area and hit the donut shop that was closed the day before. It's almost hard to see it, but it's the building with the steep roof right behind the kids. It's such a cute place.
We also stopped in and had some tacos for lunch!
One last good-bye to the goats and we were off!
We boarded the ferry and made our way back to Vancouver. We had a couple of hours when we got there and actually found a mall with a restaurant that Greg wanted to go back to (from when he was there years ago). We had crepes for dinner and made our way to the airport. Greg actually dropped the kids and me off and we took the red-eye home while he stayed so he could do some more visits the next day.
It was a wonderful opportunity to get to spend 2 straight weeks on vacation and to get to see so many beautiful places and experience so many great things. I am so, so grateful we could do it. After a crazy May, it was a special way to unwind, reset with the family and start our summer!
