Winter Arrangments

It was finally time to put the winter floral arrangements together!  I had gone out to Two Harbors with a friend and foraged for most of the greenery, had made the oranges and lemons and had bought some other things to add.  Ava was definitely wanting to help!

The goodies!

The views of our kitchen turned flower shop!

Greg put a chunk of concrete in the bottom of each of my containers and then leveled them off with about 4 inches of dirt.  Ava and I soaked the floral foam and then the pots were ready to go!

Greg and the boys were out playing football while Ava and I were inside working on these.  It was a perfect Saturday where everyone was getting to do what they wanted!

My helper!

These are the 2 arrangements for the sides of the driveway.

Up close!

We put them out (Greg actually put them out - they are super heavy) and we were really happy with how they looked!

Now it was time for the final pot for the front porch.  I did this one with the pot at a diagonal so that it would fit well into the corner.

I love it!

Here was the extra greenery I had left.  I put a message out on FB and a friend answered right away that she wanted it.  She came within the hour and took it all.

This is a picture when it is a little bit darker outside, so you can see that this one has some lights.  It was a really fun project that I got to do with Ava and am so pleased with how they turned out.  I'll be able to keep all of the non-greenery for next year, so not only should it last for a few months now, a large portion of it will be reused next year!

16 months in the making

I finally got around to doing this project that I got 16 months ago!  That is not like me at all, but I have had my hands full with projects over the past 16 months!

I saw this sign in Nauvoo and hunted down the owner of the store and eventually talked my way into getting a copy of the artwork he had done so that I could re-create the sign at home (it wasn't for sale).  He even gave me the other half of the table that he had used, so I really could have it look the way his did.

It's kind of hard to tell from a bit off, but I spent a few hours carefully adding some gold to the letters and then distressing it to make it look like old paint.

Here is a closer look.

Once I got the gold finished, I adhered it to the table top, Mod Podged over the top and then sanded the sides so that it has a nice, smoothed appearance.  Here is Greg holding the finished project!

This is a better picture of the actual coloring.  I'm so happy with how it turned out and I can't wait to hang it.  I am going to use it at the Relief Society Christmas dinner on December 3rd, so I'll probably wait until after that, but it's going to be a great addition to my craft room!

Play doh!

Ava's teacher asked me if I would make play doh for the class so they could practice making land forms.  Ava was so excited to help me!  We spent about an hour and a half making the play doh and measuring out the balls so that everyone got the same amount.  She was thrilled to be the one bringing it to school.

She came home the next afternoon and quizzed all of us on island, deltas, mountains, volcanoes, lakes and canyons!  She was so happy.  Well worth the time (and the mess).

Superhero Day

This week was Spirit Week at the middle school and this was Superhero day.  We didn't have a costume for Zach, but were able to pull off a Clark Kent.  He was very happy when he went to school, but even happier when he came home.  Lots of people knew who he was and his 6th period teacher asked if he could mess up his "bullet proof" hair.  Zach was a great sport and let him do it at the end of class...sitting on a chair in the front of the room.  Funny!  My little Superman!

A fun surprise

I was at a District meeting for school and there were displays of work that kids had done in the district and I was surprised to see that Ava's science project was on display!  She worked very hard on her project and put in a lot of hours.  It was a great surprise!

Goodbye Cruise Ship Shower!

This is James...the guy who is going to pour our new shower and do the tile work in our bathroom!  The bathroom that has a shrine to a tub and a cruise ship shower...but no more!  It will have a shrine to both by the time we are done!  I am SO excited to see this project under way.  It is the last room to remodel...hurray!!!

Scary Mary Pudding Pie

A disturbing face swap app that my kids like...disturbing!

A Proud Mama Moment

Ava got this test back that she took at the end of October.  It is the assessment for 3rd grade reading and she did awesome!  She has worked very hard and has been super diligent with her reading and all of the work has totally paid off!

Boston Day 3

We got up on Sunday morning and went to church in the oldest church in Cambridge.  It is an Episcopalian church and the service was really nice.  They have an amazing organ and choir, and it was a nice experience.

After church, we toured Harvard.  Here are all of the pictures walking around campus...it is a beautiful campus!

We went to lunch after the tour and I noticed that these cabbage flowers were in this pot.  It was the 3rd or 4th time I had seen them on this trip...I love them!

After we ate, we checked out of the hotel and spent the last 4 hours touring the city.  This was an amazing church we saw.

We headed to the Boston Public Library next.  It was AMAZING!!

That's no ordinary library!!!

We got a special treat and had a great sunset while we walked around for our final few hours.

I made one last dash to Flour Bakery and then we headed to dinner.  Back to the Barking Crab for one more fix of seafood!

Kathy and Dave...

Me and Greg!  It was a wonderful trip and we definitely made the most of our 72 hours!!  Goodbye Boston!
