Science Night!

This year I am in charge of the Family Fun Nights at the elementary school.  Our first one of the year was the Science Spooktacular!  There has never been an activity like this at our school before and so we didn't quite know what to expect and so the planning was a little crazy!  We had an RSVP button online and were excited to get 237 people who RSVP'd.  I thought I should be careful and buy dinner for 300...just in case!

Here's a shot of the fridge at school...Subway for 300 was a little tricky to fit into the fridge!

On the night of the event we had not 237 people, but 381 show up!!  Crazy!!!  We ended up having to make a quick run to get some more food for the last 15 or 20 people, but got it in time before the show started.

UMD's chemistry department came to do a show and once dinner was over, they took over.  We were scooping ice cream (made with liquid nitrogen) during the show and getting ready for dessert after the show.  Things were going pretty well until I got back on the microphone after the finale and as we were giving them a round of applause...the fire alarm went off in the school!  The last experiment was a flaming gummy bear that ended up really putting a finale feel on the night as we all had to exit the building!  We handed out the ice-cream as people walked out - thank goodness for pre-scooping!!!

It was a wild night...one I won't soon forget, but all in all it was a big success!  The kids were talking about the science show and fire alarm for days after and we didn't get any complaints from any parents...that's pretty darn perfect for all the madness of the night!

Next adventure...family dance!  I'll be sure to get plenty of pizza and keep the gummy bears away from any fire!

A new treasure

There are some people in our ward that are retiring and are going on a mission.  They were talking about some things they wanted to get rid of and one thing they mentioned was an antique pump organ.  My ears perked right up!  I went with a couple of friends out to their house and ended up coming home with this beauty!  Peggy's parents bought this organ when they lived in England and it has followed their family ever since.  It was built between 1890 and 1910 and is really in quite good condition...especially since it's been in a garage for 30 years!!

I spent about 4 hours cleaning it up and couldn't be happier about how it turned out!

I took this picture so you could tell the size of the organ.  It's a beautiful "new" treasure at our house!

The end of a season and the beginning of another!

When the candy countdown chain goes up...the official Christmas countdown in the Bacon house begins!  Just a few more weeks and we'll be decorating for Christmas!!!

Tell us how you really feel...

So...you're in to Halloween?

Wow...

Seriously, Wow!

Gone are the cowboys and astronauts and princesses!

This year for Halloween I did class parties for both Ava and Zach's classes.  The 5th graders at our school always go bowling for Halloween, so there was no class party for Andrew's class at school...which is good because I don't know if I could juggle 3!

In Ava's class we had 5 stations...here she is while the witch is reading a story...

Getting blindfolded for some drawing and coloring fun!

Here are some kids working on thumb print Halloween pictures that we turned into buttons...

No party would be complete without BINGO, and then there was a snack table.  We had a great time in the party and the kids were so, so good!  One down and one to go...

Zach's teacher, Mrs. Boyhtari, is really fun and dressed up like a hockey player!  She said she was her daughter who got a concussion playing last season! (I don't know why some of these pictures are coming in sideways again...)

Here's Zach after making his owl cupcake!

In his class we played the "wrap the mummy" game...

It's always fun to watch the kids play that game!  They also did buttons, but ones that they colored and we had another successful party!  Now all I had left was Halloween night!

At school Zach just wore the costume, but we broke out the make-up for the night!  He had a lot of fun this year, but was definitely interested in being something a little spookier...like this skeleton!

Speaking of a little bit spookier!!!  Andrew really wanted to be a zombie this year and I let him.  When I was doing his make-up, I thought it wasn't going to work out...then all of the sudden I started to tear the "skin" where I had added latex and added the blood and out of no where...zombie!  Zach was really freaked out by it and didn't even want to walk with Andrew...even though he watched me do his make-up!  Maybe a little too freaky for a friendly neighborhood trick or treat?

Oh yes, let's not forget my little princess...who wanted to be a vampire princess this year!  What happened to my sweet kids??

At least Zach is smiling in this picture...but I don't think he makes up for Andrew's zombie like stare or Ava's menacing snarl!

And one last shot of my sweet little gang...where did the cowboys, astronauts and princesses go?  My kids probably ate them!

Bagels and Ballet

The radio station I listen to has a little contest every morning where they ask a question and the winner gets a gift certificate to Big Apple Bagels.  The questions are always completely random and aren't even really "searchable" online.  They are something like, "22% of men prefer this over cheeseburgers for lunch"...it's just a guessing game!

I am usually getting out of my car in the morning before I hear the final answer, but on this particular day I thought I had a pretty good guess and so I called in!  The question was, "28% of people don't use this after they are given it"...my initial thought was dental floss (from the dentist's office), but luckily the guy who called in before me guessed that and was wrong!  I thought about it a little more and called in with "prescription medication" and was right!!!

Not only did I get the gift certificate to Big Apple Bagels, but they also had 2 tickets to the Minnesota Ballet's production of Dracula!  Greg and Andrew were out of town on the camping trip and so I went with Elsie.  We had a great time on our free night out!

It was really fun to win and who knows...maybe I'll be lucky again soon!

Our official Boy Scout!

A few weeks ago Andrew went on his first Boy Scout camp out.  It was a two night trip (they had Friday off of school) and Greg took off work to go with him.

They did two big hikes while they were on the trip...one was about 7 miles and the other was 6 miles.  The hiking was something that Andrew really loved.  He and a few other kids decided that they were going to race on the 7 mile hike and Andrew ran almost the entire way back!  One of the boys who runs cross country for the high school team stuck with Andrew and they beat the group back by quite a while.  Greg said he was keeping a good pace and was about 30 minutes behind!

Andrew helped cook pancakes and eggs for some certification and was really happy about that too!

They had a really fun trip and since then, Greg has been called as the assistant Scout Master...so they will have plenty of camping trips in their future!
