The great part isn't just in the books

I am doing the Jr. Great Book's program in both Andrew and Zach's classrooms right now. I meet with Andrew's class on Friday mornings and Zach's class on Wednesday mornings. If I am being totally honest, I wasn't super excited for the program to start...I was kind of feeling like it was just another thing to put on my list of to do items.

My first meeting was last Friday and Andrew changed my opinion of the program. He was so excited when I came in. Then, the kids were talking about who was in Jr. Great Books last year and whether or not they had liked it. Andrew piped right up and told them how awesome it would be this year since I was doing it. Cute. I mean, come on. He was so confident in my ability to make a reading program fun and cool.

We had a great first meeting and all of the kids did seem to really like it. Andrew told me how great it was a few times that afternoon when he got home and then wanted to tell Greg about it too. Who knew Jr. Great Books could be so great?

That makes 4'9"

Andrew got the best New Year's gift...he finally measured 57"! He has been checking and checking and checking...and Monday was the day! 4'9" on the button! He could not have been more excited. No more booster seat for him! Welcome to the big time...now just another 2 years and he'll make it to the front seat!!

New Year's Eve

We decided to have some friends over on New Year's Eve. I was talking to my parents earlier that day and thought there would be about 30 or so of us, but there were actually just over 40. It was very low key...no real plans...just food, friends, conversation, lots of laughter, a little karaoke and letting the kids run wild!

Here was the spread!

And the dessert spread!

It was a busy whirlwind once the chocolate got flowing! I think it was the only time we saw the kids...just for chocolate and midnight!

It was snowing a bit during the party and I thought it looked so pretty. This was right after the party...the beginning of a new year!

A Happy New Year!

Knee MRIs

Here are the MRIs of my knee. I think they are really interesting to look at, but I have to confess that even after my doctor (who is a friend) explained them to me twice, I still struggle to know exactly what I am looking at! I guess that's why people go to school to study them and don't just get a 4 minute explanation and have them mastered! In this one above, the interesting point is the small, black triangle area just in front of where the leg bones are connected. That is the meniscus...perfectly intact.

This view lets you see the ACL and other ligaments. They also look good...

This is a view of my leg that is a "slice" with my knee cap on top. This would be like looking at the rings of a tree. The area that is white/grey just under my knee cap is the articular cartilage. In this image, it still looks good. The grey area is pretty even -from the dip on the left, across the back of the knee cap. Justin said that this is higher up than the damage. The damage is almost centered behind the knee cap and this is more towards the top of the knee cap.

Here is a view of the damaged area. You can see that the grey area now has a big white mark in the middle of it. That is where the cartilage is missing and that space has filled with fluid. Not so good. So, there you have it! Now you know my knee from the inside out!
