Something to read...

I haven't done almost any blogging since June - until this past week where I have put in almost 30 hours - here's why. We decided to do Christmas gifts this year that followed "Something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read".  I have been thinking quite a bit about what I could get Greg - since he is not much of a reader - except for some car magazines...and then I thought about blogging.  Greg loves the blog books and I knew if I got it up to date, he would love to read it.  So, Greg, here is something to read!  Merry Christmas...I love you!

Clay creations

Zach and Ava were playing with Clay the other day and made some great items.  Zach did a great job with these dragons!

Ava made this (of course!)...

and this...

this was a diamond ring with shine coming off of it!

And then she brought me a little love.

Here is the full collection of Zach's dragons...

A little closer look.  They really were great!

They had such good detail and looked just like he wanted.  It was fun to see him be able to make them.

One last little guy!  It was really fun to see everything they made.  I love the creativity!!

The Relief Society Christmas Dinner

I had the idea that I wanted to canopy or tent the gym in the church for the RS dinner.  I just wanted it to feel more intimate and less like a gym.  After some careful planning, lots of shopping and some preparation, it was time to sew the fabric!  I got it on big bolts and Greg helped me cut it into 15 yard sections.  Then I had to sew pockets at the ends of each piece.  Look at this huge pile of fabric!!

This is what it looked like as I was sewing the organza.  Yep, it's literally piled as high as the window sill!!

The poplin is on the left...

Piled higher than the table!  It took me 7 hours to sew the fabric, but I finally got it all done.

When we got everything to the church, we had to lay the fabric out with the pockets facing the center.

Then we slid the metal frame through the pocket.

Connected it to the chains and attached it to a pulley system that goes to the center of the ceiling.

Then I took a bunch of oversized ornaments and hung them from the center of the ring.  The fabric was so heavy that the pulley system couldn't lift it.  I had to climb on the ladder and lift is as people pulled the pulley.  I was just happy that it held!!!

Recognize these boxes?  They have the presents inside!  We used them as part of the centerpieces for the tables.

Decorating the stage...

And getting the tables ready!

Here's what it looked like when we were done.  I was so, so excited!!

When everyone came, we served dinner and then a few minutes later, the Choraliers came and sang for about 25 minutes.  They did such a beautiful job!

After they were done, we did about a 15 minute presentation.  We turned off all of the lights in the gym and took the lanterns from the tables.  We brought out a table to the center of the stage that had a picture of Christ in the center.  One by one, we came out with our lanterns and read one of the visiting teaching messages from this year about Christ.  When we finished, we would place the lantern around the picture.  It slowly got brighter and brighter.  It was the only thing you could see in a completely dark room.  You could have heard a pin drop.  It turned out just how we hoped.  After we finished, we served dessert and then closed.  People stayed for about another hour visiting...always the sign of a good event!

It was a long day (9am to 10:30 pm) and there was a lot of prep time that came before that day, but it was worth every minute.  It was a wonderful night spent with wonderful women and a great way to kick off the Christmas holiday.

The Deer Oasis

While all the hunters are out searching for the perfect deer, all the deer are at our house.  I posted on FB and said that they are smart because they know everyone at this house would much rather go to the grocery store to get what we are grilling for dinner.  And that is the truth!

Perspective to see just how close the deer really are.

It might be hard to see, but there is another buck at the fence line and another one towards the right under the trees in the neighbor's yard.  There was also a doe in their back yard.  4 deer within a throw's distance.  They hung out for a long time...enjoying the no hunters oasis!

BASEBOARDS!!!

They have been a long time coming, and they still need putty and paint, but there are now baseboards in the main floor of the house!  Little by little...little by little...the mantra of this house!

It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving...

Without my pumpkin cheesecake.  We went down to North Branch to the Zollinger's House.  They did the turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy and I did the stuffing, creamed spinach, sweet potatoes, cheesecake and brought a drink.  She started the rolls and I finished them when we got there.  We had a wonderful Thanksgiving and were really happy to get to spend it with such great friends!

The Turkey Bowl

Andrew and Greg went to the Turkey Bowl that our ward has on Thanksgiving morning.  It was a very, very cold morning, but they were all set with their manly beards!!  Let the game begin!

Preparing for the RS Dinner

Here we are getting all of the packages finished up!

We had an ornament for everyone...

and a little collection of chocolates!

We finally got all of them filled, wrapped, and put back away so no one else would see them before the party!  It was nice to get this off of our "to do" list and have it all be set for the event.  Lots of helping hands!

The Braaten Family

The Braatens moved to Duluth about 2 years ago and their kids match up with our kids.  The twins are Andrew's age and then the other two are the same age as Zach and Ava.  All of the kids have made friends with them...without us knowing the family as a whole!  It doesn't seem like the odds of that are that good.  They are a really great family and we feel lucky to have had them move here.  We had them over for dinner and got to spend some time talking as adults too.  It was a really fun night and hopefully the beginning of a great family match!

5 stranded braid

A friend sent me a link to this braid and I had to try it the next day!  I think it is really cool, and it isn't too hard...

When I was doing it, I kept thinking...wouldn't that make pretty bread?  Maybe I'll have to try it out on that next!

Off to school!

Down to putty and paint

In the kitchen!

The knobs (they changed from what we originally bought and put on - we returned them for the same knob, but in this mirrored, antique glass instead) and the backspash.

There are still finishing touches to be done, but it has come a long, long way!!

Tapestry

I bought this tapestry from a local shop when my friends were in town and we were shopping.  I know the owner and this is something that she bought for herself while she was in Italy.  She had it at her house for a while, but was worried it was going to get ruined and didn't have a place for it on her wall.  I did!  I got it for a fair price and I really love it...I'm super happy that she parted with it!

Gifts for the RS Christmas Dinner

One of my counselors saw these cute ornaments on Pinterest and we decided to make them for all of the women in the ward.

We got a pretty good assembly line going!  Christina was rolling...

Shari was cutting...

Patti was adding the 2 textures...and I was stamping the JOY into them!  We got about 120 done and baked in about 5 hours...not too shabby!
