How do you spell relief?

This time it is "T-H-E...R-O-O-F...I-S...O-K-A-Y". We had a little scare with the roof over the past two weeks. While the gutters were being cleaned, a slate tile came sliding off the roof. The guy doing the gutters said he never even touched the roof, it was just the movement of the gutter that made it fall. That made us nervous enough, but when the repair person came to fix the piece, he made it clear that he wasn't sure if the roof was done right (he was hired by the original roofing company because they no longer have an office in the area). He told us to get the roof inspected by the city before signing the papers to release the roof funds. Very long story short, we had the city inspector, a representative from the roofing company and another roofing company all meet at our house last Thursday for a very thourough inspection and much to our relief, everything is okay! The only glitch now in the roof saga is that the roofing company filed a bogus permit stating that they were doing a $3K replacement of shingles instead of the actual monstrous fee of replacing a slate and copper roof (the permit cost is tied to the job cost). Now all we are waiting for is a small copper repair and for the paperwork to be correctly filed by the roofing company...then, a measly 5 months later, the roof will finally be done!!! Now that spells relief...

The Big 34???

I had my 34th birthday last week and it's funny that there isn't really anything to say about it. Greg and I got a sitter and went to dinner and a movie - that is always nice - but other than that it was pretty uneventful. I think since there are no milestones associated with 34, it makes for a pretty quiet birthday. Maybe next year I'll have to celebrate my true mid 30's with some type of big hoopla, but probably not! I'm guessing I'll have to wait for 39 or 40 to feel like I've really had my next "big" birthday!

If you're wondering about the picture...even googling "34" doesn't bring up anything (I mean don't get me wrong, it brings up hundreds of things, just not anything very noteworthy). I decided to pick this 34 picture because I liked it...go figure!

Applesauce anyone?

Jonna called me about a month ago and told me about a Victoria strainer that she got to can applesauce (I helped Jonna can last year for her first time and we used a Foley Food Mill). She said it was like a dream come true and made it much, much easier and quicker - enough said! My parents are always looking for good gift ideas and so I called them and told them I had something for my "wish list". Lucky for me I have an October birthday - perfect for apple season - and my parents got me the strainer. I have spent the last few days canning applesauce and am finally done! I love, love, love the strainer and can't believe how much better it is. I could do an infomercial for them! I helped my neighbor learn how to can for the first time and between the two of us we canned 35 quarts of applesauce. We are all done for the year (except for cleaning the stove top - yuck). Maybe next year I'll get a dress like the one in the picture and really start to fit the part...

Mario Gregdretti

I just had to post this picture of Greg at the race track. They did a team builder at work where they all got to go and drive these cars...it's like magic...turning men back into teenage boys! The cars go about 130 mph and Greg rode for 4 1/2 hours...oh no, that's no type-o, 4 1/2 hours!!! Greg had a great time, got a good dose of adrenaline and has the picture to prove it...

A crazy Tuesday morning in the big city

This morning I was in Minneapolis with my sister in law Lindsey, her sister Leanne, Greg's niece Amy, and their friend Jana. We drove down yesterday afternoon and had a little girl's night out and got up early this morning to shop at Macy's. The shoes and purses at Macy's were calling our names (and there isn't one in Duluth - so we needed to get our fix in the "big city").

While we were shopping we went in and out of the Louis Vuitton section and the Coach section to look at purses a few different times. During that hour, there was a guy who was in the Louis Vuitton store (it's in Macy's, but has 3 walls to make it's own little store) every time we went in. He was looking at sun glasses and talking on his cel phone. We were busy looking at purses, but definitely noticed it was strange he was still there and figured that he must be a friend of one of the workers. After we had all made our purchases and were ready to leave Macy's, we were standing near a makeup counter about 15 feet from the entrance to the Louis Vuitton store when the lady working the counter started to scream. The guy took off running and so did 2 undercover security guards (who I totally did not know were security). They didn't get to the guy fast enough and he made it out of the store and into the street - nowhere to be found with a $2000 Louis Vuitton back pack! Since we were literally right there to witness the whole thing, it was quite an adrenaline rush and pretty unnerving. The guy had waited for the right moment and then cut the wire security device (that all the bags in the store have on them to keep them attached to the display stands) with some wire cutters and ran like he just stole a $2000 bag!!

It made for a crazy morning and a memorable story for the girl's trip. And who would have thought that after just 7 months of living in a small city, I would already be telling "big city" stories!!!

Lucky number 7

I can't believe that my little Andrew is 7! His birthday was this past Sunday and we had a party for him on Saturday at the Aquarium. 13 of his friends came and it was quite a little party - lots of noise - lots of running - and lots of fun! Here he is pretending to take a bite out of his cake:

Ava enjoyed the ice-cream much more than the cake:

Someone gave Andrew a little pirate's costume as part of a present - ARRRR!!

I love my Andrew and I can't believe that he is 7! Happy Birthday Andrew!!
