The first of many...
Ava lost her first tooth on Monday night. It had been loose for a while, but she let me pull it out right before dinner. It was really cute...she was scared and wasn't sure if she could let me and I told her to tell her brain to not be scared and to tell it to "cut it out" if she started to get worried. She started talking out loud to her brain and literally told it to "cut it out". Then she let me pull it! She's getting so big.
It was funny because she didn't want to put it under her pillow for the tooth fairy because she wanted to take it to school the next day for her show and tell. Then on Tuesday when she got home from school, she wrote a letter to the tooth fairy asking if she could keep the tooth, but still get a prize. It was really cute. But, not cute enough for the tooth fairy to remember it was there!! Uh oh! So...we figured it must have been because the tooth fairy was unsure of what to do. We encouraged her to try again on Wednesday night. Unfortunately the tooth fairy has a short memory (or must have been giving her proposition a little more thought), and didn't quite get to her tooth once again. I am pretty positive that the tooth fairy set an alarm for 11:00 tonight. I think she'll finally be making her decision...
Here's a look at the letter...
I love our little toothless wonder!
31 gallons of paint on the wall, 31 gallons of paint...
On the 15th I flew out to Dodge City, Kansas to help the Bunkalls with their new house. Robyn had started working on redoing the inside before I got there, but knew she would need more help...and I have painted a room or two in my day, so I was a good fit! She decided to fly me out and have me as a worker for a week...and work we did!
Take a look at the huge pile of sawdust in the garage! They were getting the boards ready for the trim work in the house...
Here is a "before" picture of the basement...
and "after"!
This is the entryway of the house. There were popcorn ceilings and this very distinct and unusual texture on the walls (it looked just like the corrogated section of a card board box). She had the ceilings and the walls retextured - what a huge change!! They didn't actually have this area done before I left, but she has finished it since!
In the great room there is this awesome ceiling and Robyn decided to have it covered with bead board. I had never seen it before, but it looked so good. They were well on their way to finishing in this picture!
This is the upstairs loft area. And this is how I spent most of my week...painting!!
Here is a picture of the dining room. It had deep yellow walls and a dark brown tray ceiling. I could not believe how much different it looked after the walls were painted and the tray celing was white! So crisp and clean!
Here are some of the trim boards drying after being painted.
This is the trim that Robyn chose...I love it!!
This is a "before" picture of the kitchenette in the basement. It looked pretty dated, but she could see the potential!
Here is the "after"! It turned out great! It looked so different, it was hard to imagine it was the same kitchen...the miracle of paint!!
The flooring didn't go in while I was there, but she sent this picture so I could see the hard wood flooring they put down in the kitchenette and the carpet in the basement. It was the icing on the cake!
We worked and worked and worked for a week! In 5 days and 5 hours, we put in 75 hours of painting (each)!! 150 hours combined painting and 31 gallons of paint! We didn't get the entire house done, but we came pretty darn close! There were some blood, sweat and tears with the project (okay, maybe no blood), but it was worth the effort and the transformation was amazing! I can't wait to see the final pictures once she gets everything done and gets her stuff moved in!!!
Be my valentine
I can still remember how excited I was for Valentine's Day as a kid. There was a real excitment about opening all of those cards and sometimes...if you were lucky...getting a piece of candy! Now almost everyone brings candy with their valentines...somehow the kids don't seem any less excited, even though the candy is a pretty sure bet! Go figure!
These were Zach and Ava's valentines this year. The 5th graders at our elementary school go skiing for Valentine's Day and so Andrew didn't do any this year. He was plenty happy for the trade!
I did both of the kids' class parties on Valentine's Day too. In Ava's class we played bingo, made special notes that we put in balloons, had ice cream sandwiches that we rolled in sprinkles and made cotton candy in the classroom! In Zach's class we also did the ice cream sandwiches and made the valentines in balloons. We also played some fun group games - including things like stacking stuff with chop sticks and throwing marshmallows across the room to partners - the kids loved the games!
It was a great day with the kids and then after they went to bed, Greg and I had a wonderful dinner from Hanabi - our favorite sushi place - it was a perfect ending to a great day!
At the HOP!
I was in charge of the family sock hop at the school a few weeks ago and the kids really had fun with their costumes! It was the last day of spirit week, and they headed to school 50's style and then we had a great time at the dance! There were over 400 people there...a huge success!
Here's Ava all dolled up...
Heyyyyy...
The whole gang hits the stairs!
Watch out for those Bacon boys!! It was a really fun night - the kids had a blast and I was really, really pleased with how the event turned out! That's as good as it gets!!
Baby, it is seriously cold outside!
Over the past two weeks we have had some of the weather that makes Duluth famous. When you added the wind to this day, there was a wind chill of -46, which means...NO SCHOOL!!! You have to hit -40 for school to get cancelled and we did it - a couple of times!
I had some fun with the kids and found a few cold weather science experiments to do with the kids. You can see the videos below of freezing bubbles, shrinking balloons and throwing water and watching it disappear! Who needs school?? This is science - home style!
Crazy Hair Day!
During spirit week at school they had a crazy hair day...this was the Bacon family's addition to school spirit! Here's Ava from behind...
and from the front!
Here's Andrew's crazy hair...
and Z man's!
Off to school they go!
Just in case you were wondering what happened when I took Ava's hair out...this is it!! This is how I should have sent her on crazy hair day!!!
