Chasing the Northern Lights

I absolutely love to chase the Northern Lights.  When we see that the kp index numbers are high, we head out to a dark road about 20 minutes from here and watch and wait and watch.  It's so great.

Jr's

I got on a cheesecake kick and made quite a few cakes out of the Jr's Cheesecake cook book.  This is their basic cheesecake and it's delicious.  Mmmmm, Jr's!

My 1000th Post!!

When I started blogging 7 1/2 years ago, I didn't really imagine what it would become.  I started blogging so that I could keep in touch with friends that are far away and to let my parents see pictures of the kids and keep them up to date on our day to day life.

In addition to keeping in touch with people and keeping my parents up to date, the blog has become our family photo album.  It has also become a collection of our stories, adventures, joys and misadventures.  The blog is precious to my family.  The kids love to see it, to read through the blog books we have printed and they love when I post about them.  Greg loves the blog because it documents our life - and he is nostalgic when it comes to the kids.  I love the blog because it is filled with the stories of what I love to do with the people I love the most.

So, 1000 posts down and hopefully 1000 more to come.  Crazy to think that if I keep the same pace, Andrew will be 21, Zach will be 18 and Ava will be almost 16 when I hit the 2000 posts point...and I'll have all the stories and pictures to prove it!

The end of an era

Tarek was Andrew's guitar teacher for 2 1/2 years and Zach's for almost a year.  He was so great to the boys and taught them so much.  It has been wonderful and we wish him well on his new adventures!

Portraits

I had pictures of the kids done last summer while we were in Utah and finally got them printed on canvas and they arrived today!  I'm so excited to get them put up...I love these!

Conquering the stairs

We got all of the old treads off...

And got the new ones out and in order...

Painted the risers...

And then attached the new treads!

Stairs complete!!!  Check them off the list!

Paint gun wars

Andrew went and played paint ball for a friend's birthday and this was the picture that his mom sent me.  I love it!  They are so big and so small all at the same time...I just love it!

Scary faces

Greg makes some faces that make my skin crawl and make me scream...just a little bit.  This is one of those faces!

This one not as much!

Beauty in the cold

I loved this weather report because the title says, "another chilly night" - I'd say so!

One of the great things about the extremely cold weather is what it does to the lake.  I love to go out to the shores of Lake Superior on the bitter days and take pictures.  Here are just a few...

Somalia

Greg's brother Barry has done medical work as a missionary for years.  He has spent time in Malawi many times (for a few years the first time) and has traveled to other cities in Africa as well.  His latest work has taken him to Somalia.  He didn't tell us where he was going until he was there and kept his travels very private until he was leaving the area - that way there was no information out there that could potentially put him in danger.  He sent this photo out in one of his emails and I couldn't stop looking at it.  It's such a fascinating picture.  The area is so devastated, but the architecture of the buildings in the back ground are amazing.  The fish are pretty spectacular too.  It's just such a harsh contrast of what the area could be and what it is.  Barry's work is a calling for him and he's amazing to listen to and be inspired by.

New hardware for Andrew

Notes from Ava

I love this note from Ava.  She was putting the dishes away, but can't reach the cupboard where these go.  She left this note...love her.

The Fortress shear

Greg's company has started making mobile shears.  Here is a completed Fortress 85SR.  They are really excited to start selling them.  Greg and I have been working on all of the advertising materials and we are really pleased with how they are turning out.  Here's to some good sales!

Work, work, work

Putting up the trim in the living room.

Painting the trim.

And painting the trim.

Until the room is DONE!!

The other view.

And another.

And the last!  The living room is finally complete!

On to the danger stairs!!!

This is what the stairs have looked like for over 7 months...not the most safe...but everyone survived!  The railings have been stripped and stained and now we are prepping them for the new spindles.

The first thing we had to do was to plug the old holes and only leave about a 1/2 inch space to glue in the new spindles.  We cut lots of little plugs!

And then we cut LOTS of rod iron.  It was cold in the garage and you have to hold the iron really tight.  This was definitely a two man job (or a husband/wife job in our case).

Then we began to install the spindles...hasta la vista danger stairs.

And we finished the spindles!!!

Next, we installed a small spotlight for the picture over the mantle.

And hung some very high artwork!

Just when you think all the staining is done, you realize there is quite a bit more!  We decided to retread the stairs...here are the new ones being stained.

We had the treads spread out all over Greg's shop.  It's a great place to use - and we have really used it!  There have been a lot of projects getting completed, but we still have a long way to go!
