Any opinions?

This is the hairstyle I am thinking about getting if my stylist in Utah can fit me in while I am there. Any opinions? Any other suggestions?

Update: Sabrina just called me back and is going to fit me in at 2:30 on Friday...now I really have to make a decision!

The Cavalry has come and gone

My parents just left our house. They came in very late on Tuesday night and left after dinner tonight. It seemed like a very quick visit to me - 4 1/2 days goes by pretty quickly - especially when we were really in need of the cavalry!!

Greg and I have been working so much on the house that the kids really needed some quality play time - thanks cavalry!

I am going somewhat insane (more than usual) and so I needed a sanity check and to be with people that I don't have to curb my emotions around - thanks cavalry!

I was really, really hoping to get the microwave installed so that the kitchen was fully functioning. I had no idea that because our house is old and has concrete walls and then lathe and plaster, that it would be a 2 day, 4 Home Depot trip project...but it got done - thanks cavalry!

I needed the motivation to stop my other projects and get the plastic off of the other appliances, go grocery shopping (something I haven't really done in 6 months) and actually cook - yes, I said cook a meal - thanks cavalry - I know my husband and kids thank you for that one too!

And our entire family needed to have some time where all we did was walk around Canal Park, get some treats, go to a playground, come home, watch a movie and eat some fresh baked cookies - thanks cavalry!

Like Zach begged when they were leaving...can't you just stay here forever? It doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me...

Preyper mache

A few weeks ago I mentioned that we were doing a project in YW that involved paper mache animals that would be stuffed with meat and fed to the zoo animals. I finally have a few pictures! I have a couple of more that are really good on my phone, but can't get them to send - ahh technology!

Preyper mache is a program that zoos can choose to participate in where volunteers can make "animals" that allow the zoo animals to stalk and get their food in a more natural way than on an average day. They made a really big deal about it here. It was on the big customer appreciation day that had a band, food and events every 15 minutes at different habitats. It was a fun project to work on and the girls had a good time watching the animals eat all of their hard work!

Here is a picture of the deer:

Here is a picture of it behind bars - waiting for the snow leopard to get it!

And here is a picture of a bear eating one of the preyper maches that the girls did (It was a "zebra" - complete with hot pink stripes, blue lips, eye shadow, eye lashes and leg warmers):

It wasn't your typical YW service project, but when we asked the zoo what we could do for them, this is what they wanted. It ended up being really great and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a service project with a twist!

Heading "Home"

It's funny how "home" changes. I can remember when Virginia was home, then Utah, then California, then Michigan, then Utah...Minnesota hasn't been settled quite enough to feel like home and so Utah is still holding the title right now.

Anyhow, I am coming to Utah late on Wednesday night for my friend Justin's wedding. I'll be doing wedding things all day on Thursday and on Saturday, but will have other time there if anyone wants to get together. I know I have Friday late afternoon/night free and all of Monday free. I would love to see anyone who has time and will be in town on the holiday weekend. I'd be up for just about anything! Anyone for dinner and a movie on Friday night?

I'm feeling a little Henny Penny today

Okay, so anyone who knows anything about us getting into our house knows that the big "hang up" with closing was the roof. There was some hail damage (to about 300 tiles), but there was no way to repair just those tiles and so the roof is being replaced by the insurance company of the previous owners. They dropped the materials off last week - covering our entire walk way and part of the driveway (including a dumpster) - and started the job today.

I guess if someone would have asked me if the job was going to be loud, I would have said yes. However, I had no idea! They are using a pitch fork to pry the old slate off of the roof and then it either tumbles down the very, very steep roof or they throw it into the dumpster and it smashes into little slate chips. There have also been a number of times today when out of the corner of my eye I see a huge piece of roof falling past a window (one time on the 3rd floor) and it is a little disheartening. You just can't help but have a little moment of panic when you see something falling like that.

Who would have thought that I would be looking forward to the "quieter" days of nailing the new slate on? For now, I'll just try to remember that it's just the roof falling and not the sky.

Breaking Mom's Heart

Sometimes I am amazed at what my kids understand about a situation and other times I am reminded just how little they really are and how hard it is to comprehend life. I was talking to the kids about getting ready for school the other day and Andrew was really excited about starting 1st grade. Zach quickly chimed in that he would be going to school too. We were talking about how much fun it was going to be when he said, "I'm so happy to go back to school and see all of my friends again. I know they have been so sad to not see me. They will be so, so happy that I am back."

I didn't know what to say. I was a little overwhelmed that he obviously doesn't understand that his school friends won't be at this new school and I was pretty sad to hear him express how the other kids must be feeling - since it is clear that must be how he is feeling. I am sure he will make friends quickly and be fine, but in the moment it reminded me of his tender, little feelings and kind of broke the "mom" part of my heart.
